U Thant and the Planet Earth

What do you wish future historians from another planet say about us humans?

U Thant once asked rhetorically what we wish future historians from another planet to say about us humans and how we took care of our planet Earth. What would you wish future historians to say about us living now? And how can we make sure that becomes a reality?

U Thant in his closing statement to the twenty-fifth anniversary commemorative session of the United Nations, October 24, 1970:

“As we watch the sun go down, evening after evening, through the smog across the poisoned waters of our native earth, we must ask ourselves seriously whether we really wish some future universal historian on another planet to say about us, ‘With all their genius and with all their skill, they ran out of foresight and air and food and water and ideas’, or ‘They went on playing politics until their world collapsed around them’; or ‘When they looked up, it was already too late’.”

သင့်အနေဖြင့် တခြားဂြိုလ်ကမ္ဘာက အနာဂတ်သမိုင်းပညာရှင်များက ကျွန်ုပ်တို့လူသားများ အကြောင်းကို ဘယ်လို မှတ်တမ်းစေချင်ပါသလဲ။

အနာဂတ်မှာ တခြားဂြိုလ်ကမ္ဘာက သမိုင်းပညာရှင်တွေက ကျွန်ုပ်တို့လူသားတွေ အကြောင်းနဲ့ ကမ္ဘာကြီးကို ဘယ်လိုစောင့်ရှောက် ဆက်ဆံခဲ့သလဲ ဆိုတာကို ရေးသားမှတ်တမ်းတင်မယ်ဆိုရင် ဘယ်လို ပြောစေချင်သလဲလို့ တစ်ခါက ဦးသန့် ပညာသားပါပါ မေးခွန်းထုတ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်။ သင်တို့ရော ဒီအနာဂတ် သမိုင်းပညာရှင်တွေကို ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ရဲ့ အသက်ရှင်နေထိုင်မှုနဲ့ ပတ်သက်ပြီး ဘယ်လို ဆိုစေချင်ပါသလဲ။ ကိုယ် ပြောစေချင်တဲ့ အတိုင်း အမှန်တကယ် ဖြစ်လာဖို့ ဘာတွေ လုပ်ဆောင်ဖို့ လိုအပ်ပါသလဲ။

၁၉၇၀ခုနှစ်၊ အောက်တိုဘာလ ၂၄ ရက်နေ့က ကျင်းပသည့် ၂၅ ကြိမ်မြောက် ကုလသမဂ္ဂ နှစ်ပတ်လည် အခမ်းအနားတွင် နိဂုံးချုပ် အမှာစကားမှ ကောက်နှုတ်တင်ပြပါသည်။

“ညနေခင်းတိုင်းမှာ ကမ္ဘာမြေကြီးရဲ့ အဆိပ်သင့်နေတဲ့ ရေရင်းမြစ်တွေ၊ ညစ်ညမ်းနေတဲ့ လေထု၊ မီးခိုးမြူတွေကြားထဲ တိုးဝင်ပျောက်ကွယ်သွားတဲ့ နေဝန်းနီနီကြီးကို ကြည့်တဲ့အခါ အနာဂတ်မှာ တခြားဂြိုလ်ကမ္ဘာက လူသားသမိုင်းအကြောင်း လေ့လာတဲ့ သမိုင်းပညာရှင်တစ်ယောက်က ကျွန်ုပ်တို့ကို ဘယ်လိုမှတ်တမ်းတင် ရေးသားမလဲဆိုတာကို စဉ်းစားကြည့်ကြစေချင်ပါတယ်။ ‘သူတို့လို ဉာဏ်ပညာနဲ့ အရည်အချင်းရှိတဲ့ လူသားတွေဟာ နောက်ဆုံးမှာ အမြော်အမြင် နည်းပါးလေတော့ လေထု၊ ရေထုနဲ့ အစာရေစာတွေပါမကျန် ပျက်စီးကုန်ဆုံးသွားပြီး ကြံရာမရ ဖြစ်လေကြတော့သည်’ ဒါမှမဟုတ် ‘သူတို့ဟာ အမိကမ္ဘာကြီး ပြိုလဲသွားတဲ့အချိန် အထိ နိုင်ငံရေး ကစားကွက်များနဲ့သာ လုံးလည်လိုက်နေခဲ့ကြလေသည်’ ဒါမှမဟုတ် ‘သူတို့ အသိတရား ရပြီး ပြင်ဆင်ဖို့ ကြိုးစားကြတဲ့အချိန်မှာတော့ အရာအားလုံးဟာ နောက်ကျနေခဲ့ချေပြီ’။ ဆိုပြီးရေးသားမှတ်တမ်းတင်တာခံမလား ဆိုတာကို လေးလေးနက်နက် စဉ်းစားဖို့လိုပါပြီ။”
