Facts

U Thant was born in Pantanaw, Myanmar (then called Burma), on 22 January 1909 and died on 25 November 1974 after a long illness. He was 65 years old.

Appointment

U Thant was unanimously appointed Secretary-General by the General Assembly on 30 November 1962 and retired at the end of his second term in 1971 .
